Is your eyeglass frame titanium? In the first half of the 1980s, titanium eyeglass frame production was made possible in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, for the first time in the world. This town is in an area with heavy snowfall and the residents started to make glasses as a wintertime industry because agriculture would be on halt. Currently, they are producing 20% of the world’s eyeglass frame and 90% in Japan. Here, one out of every six local residents is engaged in the eyeglass industry. Globally acknowledged high-end eyeglass production is supported by crafts-people in Sabae City with its history. We praise their strive for active innovation.
